Dental Extractions with Bone Graft in Brooklyn, NY

Extractions are the process of removing a tooth from its socket in the bone. A dentist or oral surgeon performs an extraction when the tooth is severely decayed, broken below the gum line, impacted, or if the tooth has suffered from trauma and cannot be restored in any other manner. Some patients also choose to extract their wisdom teeth after they come in, as there is not enough room for them in the mouth, and they are unable to come in properly.

Post-Extraction Care

After the procedure is complete, the patient is free to go home and rest until any discomfort has subsided. Over-the-counter pain relievers are often sufficient to manage the pain experienced after an extraction.

Bone Grafting Procedure

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with healthy, strong bone tissue. The procedure is used to repair defects in the bone caused by trauma or developmental issues but can also be used cosmetically to change the shape or size of a patient’s jaw. Bone grafting is typically completed in one procedure by an oral surgeon, periodontist, or oral maxillofacial surgeon.

While dental implants are titanium posts designed to replace the roots of a tooth, bone grafts replace missing or damaged jaw bone tissue. Dental implants are stable enough to support a crown, bridge, or other restoration and do not require additional procedures such as bone grafts.

When patients are missing teeth due to decay, gum disease, or traumatic injury, their jawbone may no longer provide the necessary support for the surrounding teeth and gum line. The loss of support can lead to further tooth loss and even collapse of the facial structure. When this occurs, patients require surgical implantation of metal posts into the jaw to stabilize it and provide the needed support for restorations. For patients who are not candidates for traditional implants because of insufficient bone, bone grafting is required prior to implant surgery to increase bone mass and prepare the site for the successful placement of an implant post.
